UEFA Champions league : New Format and its cons

The UEFA announced a new format for the Champions league amid the Super League drama which is set to take place from 2024

The UEFA announced that the new edition of the Champions league will see a total of 36 teams and added more matches to be played by the teams, There will be two tables a normal of 20 with each teams in the table will play at least 10 games instead of the current six. There will be no repeat of the matches instead clubs will face 10 different opponents with half of the games at home and other half on the road the same as league setting.

Where does the four new spot come from ?
  • The first slot will go to the club ranked third in the league table and fifth in the association of the UEFA rankings
  • The second slot goes to a domestic champion after expanding the "champions path" from our clubs to five
  • The third and the fourth slots go to the two clubs with highest club coefficients that have not qualified automatically for the league stages of the Champions league
  • The major changes will be the round of 16, with top 8 teams will go in the last 16, but teams 9-24 will enter a playoff round. Teams 9-16 will be seeded, and 17-24 won't be. The teams who lose the playoffs enter the Europa league, while those finishing 25 and below are booted from the competition.
Noting that this came in the light the The Super League plans where loud and clear by the founding European clubs but this has more downside to the players and more advantage to the association plotting the format which will only be gruesome and more challenging for the players physically and mentally and will stretch them to their limits.

UEFA sites this changes are meant to include more opportunities to see Europe's top teams play each other, while also improving the importance of every match, winning or losing can make the difference between a side making the last 16, entering the playoffs or being eliminated, in response the backlash of the Super League fans made their voices loud and clear stating that clubs need the qualify for such prestigious tournament on basis of merit not on bias thus putting an end to the idea of the Super league

The Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan shared his opinion on the new Champions league format, calling out UEFA as a lesser of the two evils in comparison of the Super league with a format only to look after the financial aspects of the game and not the players

The German International went on saying " More and more games, is no one thinking about us players, The UCL format right now works great and that is why it's the most popular club competition in the world for us players and fans"

Obviously such a move would see an increase number of games and viewership of the matches but this could have a toll on the players health which was exactly the point of Ilkay Gundogan, UEFA will have to lookout for the players or the situation could turn out dire with rise of the players association which has had the seeds sowed due to the number of games players are already playing in this season due to Pandemic.
